Who is Lord Siva?

Nowadays it is very fashionable to chant to and warship Lord Siva. That is good, but sometimes it becomes just a fashion or cool or something, and we want to gratify our senses or ego by being (or making a show of being) a devotee of Siva.

This is not pleasing to Lord Siva. Siva is a person similarly to how we are persons BUT he is not a living entity like you and me he is ‘Siva shakti’ – He is in another category far above the rest of the living entities like you and me. It is said that there are two positions that are practically impossible to understand one is the position of the guru and the other is the position of Siva.

Who is Guru?

Srila prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada clears up the confusion about who is a bona fide, fully empowered real guru in a lecture on the Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.6.8 in Vrndavana India on November 30, 1976

So just like ordinary cloud is made possible by evaporating water from the sea, similarly, Krsna has the sea of mercy, karunayamaya, karuna-sagara. Krsna’s another name is Karuna-sagara. So as the air evaporate or the heat evaporate from the sea, and the cloud is formed in the sky, similarly, one who has connection or the power to evaporate the mercy sea of Krsna, he can extinguish the samsara davanala. And that is guru. Guru is the cloud or he is the agent of drying water from the ocean of mercy of Krsna and turn it into a mercy cloud and pour water on the samsara davanala, and then it is extinguished. Samsara davanala-lidha-loka-tranaya karunya-ghanaghanatvam, praptasya kalyana.

“This transcendental vibration by chanting of Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, is the sublime method for reviving our Krishna consciousness. As living spiritual soul, we are all originally Krishna conscious entities, but due to our association with matter from time immemorial, our consciousness is now polluted by material atmosphere. In this polluted concept of life we are all trying to exploit the resources of material nature, but actually we are becoming more and more entangled in our complexities. This illusion is called maya, or hard struggle for existence, for winning over the stringent laws of material nature. This illusory struggle against material nature can at once be stopped by revival of our Krishna consciousness.

A Devotees Personal Life

Recently I was thinking how nice it is to spend my life giving people Spiritual knowledge and I know many people may be interested in what is a devotees personal life like so I wrote this personal honest account of my life:

I feel so fortunate to be able to assist in others becoming fortunate. For the last 16 years of my life I have been daily distributing the timeless transcendental wisdom translated into english by Srila Prabhupada. Daily I go out and meet so many people and offer them Srila Prabhupada’s books and they often look deep into my eyes with this intense look of focus, gratitude, amazement, and relief (relief because they are finally getting what their souls have been craving for, for so long, and is so valuable) and thank me repeatedly for doing what I do. It really is nice.

It is so nice not because it gives me a big ego trip that I am the one giving them this wonderful stuff and they are so grateful to me, but because it is really important and makes a difference in this world and touches people deep in their hearts! (And for me the most important thing is I know Srila Prabhupada really wants these books distributed.)

This service is not just profiteering or trying to work to get a few bucks to maintain my bodily existence trying to satisfy (or create/manipulate) the unending river of bodily or mental desires that we are helplessly carried away by, like being trapped on a roller-coaster ride that will not stop and there is no way off. Not a dreary job we do because we have to, so we do it with no fresh enthusiasm to try to really help the people that our job is there for. No, this is an offering of something real, a positive alternative to the boring dreariness of monotonous material life.

Desires? Just Add Krishna!

desire just add krishna

“Perfection of pure devotional service is attained when all attention is diverted towards the transcendental loving service of the Lord. To cut off the tie of all other affections does not mean complete negation of the finer elements, like affection for someone else. This is not possible. A living being, whoever he may be, must have this feeling of affection for others because this is a symptom of life. The symptoms of life, such as desire, anger, hankerings, feelings of attraction, etc., cannot be annihilated. Only the objective has to be changed. Desire cannot be negated, but in devotional service the desire is changed only for the service of the Lord in place of desire for sense gratification. The so-called affection for family, society, country, etc., consists of different phases of sense gratification. When this desire is changed for the satisfaction of the Lord, it is called devotional service.”

We were all born not by chance but by our own perfect selection, work and the way in which we chose to live our last life (some call this Karma or reincarnation). We took our birth in a particular family, situation and country, and got a specific type of body, mentality, set of desires just suiting the consciousness we cultivated over many lives. This birth, body, mind, circumstances etc was all specifically awarded to us in a very scientific system that has been in place since time immemorial. Since we are here in this situation and with our particular specific individual desires and mentality we are not going to change it too easily!!!

BUT we always have our free will! This we will never ever lose – this no one can take away from us no matter what!!!  What we CAN do is choose HOW we use that nature.
